Cold Brewed Coffee For Hot Summer Days

Cold brewed coffee just tastes better. There is something about hot brewed, drip coffee that destroys flavor and adds a bitterness. You may find that, like me, you can drink cold brewed coffee black, since it really doesn't need a sweetener or cream to mellow the bitterness. I make it the day before I want it. If you drink it in the morning, you can set it up the night before.

While it's a lovely, easy way to make iced coffee, you can, of course, heat it when you want to drink it as well. I like cold-brewing coffee during the summer because making it doesn't heat the house up, and on colder days I'll use my stovetop espresso maker, which also manages to brew without the bitterness.

ground coffee

Instructions: Simply measure 2 Tbsp or so of ground coffee in a jar, add 2 cups of tap water, cap the jar, and shake to combine. Toss it in the fridge, and several hours later you will have a nice, dark, non-bitter coffee.

When I'm ready to drink it, I pour the whole contents of the jar into my French press, and press the grounds down. Then, it's ready to drink cold or warm. If you don't have a French press, you could pour it through a coffee filter instead.

As a couple of readers have commented, you can definitely make this directly in your French press rather than the jar. Just add grounds & water to the press and give a good stir to combine, refrigerate that, and then press it in the morning.

One thing I like about this method, besides the improved flavor, is that it will remain a simple and effective way of making coffee even if we lose power. It's low-tech, and doesn't heat the house on hot summer days.

I had no clue that you could make coffee this way! What an awesome idea! I will have to try it. It would certainly beat my summer ritual of making hot coffee at night and then putting it in the fridge for iced coffee the next morning :-)

I do this too! I'm lazy though and just put the coffee and water straight in my french press, give it a stir and leave overnight in the fridge. Then I press it in the morning : ) I also have made vanilla simple syrup for times when I want to sweeten the coffee.

You could also add the grounds and water directly to the french press and refrigerate that, eliminating the need for the extra container! :)

You definitely could make it directly in your French press! It's funny how sometimes we keep doing things the hard way out of habit. I started out cold brewing in a quart jar because my larger French press doesn't fit in the fridge unless it's already pressed down. But the 2 cup press totally fits! Thanks ;)

THANK YOU for this wonderful idea; I LOVE iced coffee with just a touch of cream (no sweetening). This is one of those why-didn't-I-think-of-that? things. We've known about Sun Tea for decades; why not coffee? But then you take it up a notch by brewing it in the fridge. You could probably do tea the same way. Have you tried it? Thanks a bunch!

Love cold brewed coffee! Tea works the same way. I just toss the bags in the container and then into the fridge at night, and it's ready to go in the morning. Who know?? :-)

I don't think I've ever heard of cold-brewed coffee...

I love my coffee black, and my french-press makes delicious coffee, but I think I'll give this method a try - I love anything that can be made ahead!

Wow...I never tried to cold brew....thanks for the info!

I love mocha frappes but not the price so I now make my own here is my recipe:

2 cups ice....1 1/2 c 2% milk (any milk u prefer)....1 pkg hot chocolate mix.....5 rounded teas of instant coffee mixed into 1/4 c hot water....place into blender...mix until smooth....Enjoy!

You can add a flavored syrup or a couple of teas to sugar if you like it super sweet.......can also top it with whip cream.

It is a wonderful treat for children minus the coffee.

I just found your blog and love it! I've been reading thru the archives and have become quite inspired. Sadly, I noticed you haven't posted since May. Hopefully you and your family are well (perhaps traveling?) and will be posting again soon!

Has it really been that long?! I've been working on a few articles, but yes, we've been doing so much this summer that it's hard to get anything finished. Still here though!! And, thank you :)
